Knottingley Town Hall was built in 1865 on the grounds of a 15th century religious settlement. Much of its cellar still houses the original monastic foundations once occupied by an order of monks until disbanded by King Henry VIII under his Dissolution of the Monasteries attack on religious houses in 1536-1541. Following its opening the Town Hall quickly became the focal point for social activities within the town which included balls and dances, concerts, exhibitions and council meetings. The present and rather tired exterior of the building belies the great warmth and affection it generates from the local people who continue to attend the premises for various community gatherings and group meetings. The place has sadly known great tragedy after one active member of its committee recently fell to his death on the main staircase.
Over the years Knottingley Town Hall has gained an infamous reputation as being extremely haunted due to the numerous and ongoing reports of strange activity and unexplained ghostly sightings. Committee member Anne Holland told us "Something is definitely going on here and investigations from paranormal organisations only seem to be making it worse. People tell us all sorts of things they have seen and experienced and I don't like being here on my own. Our dance teacher told us only recently that she was in the building alone when she heard heavy clomping footsteps walking in the area above."
- Glasses from the bar suddenly smash onto the floor when no-one is in area
- Sightings of a fog like mist
- Figures of two ladies dressed in dark clothing seen walking down a corridor who disappeared when approached by member of staff
- Apparition of a small child seen throughout building
- Dramatic temperature drops and sounds of heavy breathing
- Figure of former staff member named Annie who passed away some years witnessed on CCTV
- Voices and murmuring and loud footsteps heard when no-one in building
- Table moved unaided when no-one in vicinity
